The University of Macau (UM) this year will continue to sponsor two postgraduate students for their studies at the University of California, Berkeley (UC Berkeley), one of the top universities in the world.  Mu Heqing, a PhD student from the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, Faculty of Science and Technology (FST), and Fong Kin-Sio, a PhD student from the Department of Finance and Business Economics, Faculty of Business Administration, will leave for the United States in late August. Mu and Fong relish the prospect of studying at UC Berkeley, saying that they hope to learn from the research experience of the scholars and postgraduates there to broaden their horizons and to better prepare themselves for their PhD dissertations.

UM signed a collaboration agreement with UC Berkeley in 2007, with the purpose of strengthening collaboration in research and postgraduate exchange. In 2009 UM recommended the first group of postgraduate students for UC Berkeley’s Visiting Researcher Scholar and Postdoc Affairs (VSPA) Program. So far UM has sponsored six students for participating in this programme, and most of them have been from FST.
