The 2022 edition of the Macao Tourism Industry Workshop took place at the University of Macau, Faculty of Business and Administration, from June 15-16th (two-day event) with representatives from the private and public sectors, including almost 30 (thirty) senior executives across the various hospitality and tourism sectors: gaming, hotel, aviation, airport, retail, MICE, MGTO, business chamber, legal advisers and some SMEs involved in Macao’s hospitality industry.

The workshop had six sessions and was facilitated by Professor Glenn McCartney and Jose Pinto looking at present challenges and possible recovery solutions to Macao’s tourism, casino, and hospitality sectors. A key theme was on how to best position Macao on a sustainable path to recovery, and secure tourism growth within the Greater Bay Area.
The two-day event was highly interactive and fun, with groups teaming up to deliver branding campaigns presented as a TikTok viral promotional video challenge.

Our distinguished guest and jury for the workshop, Professor Michael Hui, Vice-rector of the University of Macau and Chair Professor of Marketing at FBA, assessed several outstanding and different approaches to a Macao branded campaign on TikTok. The teams exceeded all expectations by going above and beyond and presenting outstanding campaign proposals supported by research, and amazing videos made on smartphones and using the TikTok platform.

From this event, a community of tourism industry professionals is emerging. We are preparing for other events this year and beyond, expanding Faculty’s role as a platform for tourism professionals’ growth, and executive development, presenting insights on future perspectives for tourism, and co-creating a new destination brand under uncertainty in Macao and the Greater Bay Area.

Thanks also to the Education Fund for kindly supporting this workshop.
