Abstract
Person-environment (P-E) fit has long been a focal point in career management and human resource management research. Despite a plethora of empirical studies, P-E fit research has drawn criticism for: (1) its vague conceptualization and operationalization, potentially muddling the meaning of P–E fit and its interplay with other constructs; (2) neglecting emerging P-E fit issues in the rapidly evolving career landscape; and (3) a dearth of interdisciplinary integration of research findings and theoretical perspectives. The presenter will share collaborative projects that seek to address these pressing concerns and propose an agenda for future exploration. Leveraging an interdisciplinary approach, the presenter will: (1) share co-authored papers highlighting the multifaceted effects of P-E misfit on employee performance; (2) assess the potential of the Identity-Capability-Reward (ICR) and cybernetic development models to reconceptualize P-E fit in the context of a boundaryless career; and (3) discuss the repercussions of career management research for human resource management and pertinent fields.
