The latest QS World University Rankings by Subject have been released, with the University of Macau (UM) once again placed in the 51–100 band globally in the field of Hospitality & Leisure Management. This marks the fourth consecutive year that UM has remained within the global top 100. For a discipline that is still in a phase of rapid development, such consistent performance reflects the University’s growing academic maturity and highlights its established position in the global higher education landscape.

Amid intensifying global competition in tourism and hospitality education, where increasing emphasis is placed on international reputation and real-world impact, UM’s continued presence in the top 100 band signals that the discipline has progressed beyond its initial stage and entered a phase of steady advancement and sustained accumulation. This achievement not only affirms the current strength of the programme, but also indicates a clear development trajectory and a solid foundation for enhancing its visibility and influence in the global hospitality and leisure management field.

Since its establishment in March 2019, the Department of Integrated Resort and Tourism Management (DRTM) under the Faculty of Business Administration has remained rooted in Macau while maintaining a global outlook. Closely aligned with Macau’s strategic positioning as a World Centre of Tourism and Leisure, the department actively explores a development path that integrates international perspectives, industry engagement, and local characteristics. Leveraging Macau’s unique industrial ecosystem and geographic advantages, the department continues to promote the integration of teaching, research, and practice, with the goal of nurturing high-calibre talents equipped with professional expertise, innovative thinking, and global competitiveness.

It is worth noting that, in the context of higher education development, maintaining a position within the global top 100 over multiple years reflects a form of sustainable capacity building. It signifies not short-term breakthroughs, but rather the outcome of long-term investment in institutional foundations, faculty strength, teaching and research quality, and social recognition. UM’s stable performance in the QS rankings is a direct manifestation of its sustained efforts in discipline development, its gradual expansion of international influence, and its commitment to high-quality growth.

Looking ahead, the Department of Integrated Resort and Tourism Management will continue to pursue excellence by further leveraging Macau’s unique position as an international tourism city. The department will deepen reforms in teaching, advance research innovation, and strengthen industry collaboration, with a view to enhancing its academic standing and contributing to the high-quality and sustainable development of the tourism and hospitality industry in Macau, the Greater Bay Area, and beyond.
