Abstract
Despite the majority role of unlisted private firms in the economy worldwide, their disclosure decisions have been understudied. This paper focuses on an important element of private firms’ non-financial disclosure, their ESG disclosure. Exploiting a source of unstructured data and natural language processing (NLP) techniques, we build a comprehensive database for private firm ESG disclosure. Using this novel data, we continue to examine its trends and related economic forces. The contribution of this paper is two-fold. First, it fills the gap in the literature regarding ESG disclosure by private firms. Second, it uncovers the capital market implications of these disclosures.
