Bachelor Student Welcome Event of the Department of Integrated Resort and Tourism Management|A Warm and Fulfilling First Encounter
At 3:30 PM on August 15, under perfect sunshine and a gentle breeze, the Department of Integrated Resort and Tourism Management held its 2025/2026 academic year undergraduate welcome event in the Hospitality Service Laboratory. All freshmen gathered to embark on the first chapter of their university journey.
The event began with a passionate welcome speech by Professor Li MIAO, the Head of Department, who warmly greeted everyone on behalf of the department and welcomed them into this vibrant and opportunity-filled family.
She introduced the department’s core structure and gave a “sneak peek” into the exciting highlights of the coming years:
- Joint training program with Fudan University
- Overseas study opportunities (e.g., previous trips to Las Vegas, USA and Singapore)
- A four-year phased plan of activities and internships
Professor Miao encouraged students to be bold in exploration and active in participation, enhancing their professional competence and global perspective through practice.
“A Faculty Dream Team Full of Humor and Wisdom”
Next, the faculty members took turns introducing themselves in a humorous and engaging manner. Each teacher not only shared the courses they would be teaching but also offered sincere and practical advice based on their own experiences.
Professor Davis Ka Chio FONG joked, “Although I’ve been at UM for 31 years, I still feel like it’s my first day every day. I hope you all can keep that same enthusiasm!” Associate Professor Glenn James MCCARTNEY showcased his “personal weapon” and encouraged students to bravely pursue their dreams through his own story.
The room was filled with laughter and applause, creating an atmosphere as lively as a stand-up comedy show!
“Snacks and Conversations: A Cozy Moment”
After the introductions, it was time for something “real”—a table full of exquisite snacks and drinks prepared by the department.
Students gathered in small groups, chatting while enjoying the treats, and actively engaged with the professors. The atmosphere was relaxed and heartwarming.
“Freshmen Voices: Choices and Expectations from Different Regions”
The editor also randomly interviewed a few freshmen to hear why they chose the tourism program and their initial impressions:
- UYÊN NGUYỄN from Vietnam:
“I was very lucky to meet UM professors when they visited our high school. Their friendliness, enthusiasm, and professionalism left a deep impression on me. I was fortunate to receive a scholarship to study at UM. This department is vibrant, innovative, and academically rigorous. I’m excited and looking forward to gaining the knowledge and practical skills needed to achieve my career goals.”
- Shan Tong from Macau:
“I’ve always been interested in the tourism industry. This program was my first choice. The professors are all very interesting, and I think the learning journey ahead will be enjoyable!”
- Yuen Chong from Hong Kong:
“I chose UM because it’s a great university! I’m interested in tourism-related careers, and the activities mentioned by the Head of Department are very appealing. I’m really looking forward to it!”
- Yan Sen from Mainland China:
“I was admitted to UM through the Outstanding Athlete Admission Scheme. The professors are humorous and friendly, and there are lots of activities. I feel very happy!”
This welcome event was more than just a simple ceremony—it felt like a “prelude to a journey,” allowing students to experience the warmth and depth of the tourism department in advance.
In the Department of Integrated Resort and Tourism Management, every student is a “traveler,” and together we will explore the mountains, rivers, and seas of knowledge.
Today marks the beginning of our shared journey.
