At the recently held “Technology & Tourism Management Insights” joint webinar, Professor Anthony Wong from the University of Macau’s Department of Integrated Resort and Tourism Management and Professor Dora Agapito from the University of Algarve, Portugal, presented an in-depth discussion on the integration of technology and tourism.
Drawing from his recent research, Professor Anthony Wong detailed the application of generative AI in tourism decision-making processes. Through live demonstrations, he vividly illustrated how ChatGPT has evolved from a simple conversational chatbot into an “intelligent assistant” capable of providing comprehensive travel planning solutions. From multi-destination comparisons with budget constraints to recommending unique experiences from a “local resident” perspective, and even managing emergencies in real time, ChatGPT demonstrated versatile service capabilities that surpass traditional travel websites.
Professor Dora Agapito shared her research findings from another critical perspective. Focusing on the connection between “technology, sensory experiences, and tourist well-being,” she emphasized that in the digital age, technological applications should not only aim to improve efficiency but also enhance visitors’ emotional experiences and psychological well-being through multi-sensory stimulation. Her research highlights that appropriate technological interventions can effectively deepen the immersion and memorability of travel experiences, offering valuable insights into the human-centric value of intelligent technology.
The two scholars’ research complemented each other perfectly: Professor Wong demonstrated AI’s instrumental value in optimizing tourism processes, while Professor Agapito illuminated technology’s deeper significance in enhancing tourists’ subjective well-being. These dual perspectives of technological efficiency and humanistic concern provided attendees with more comprehensive dimensions for consideration.
During the Q&A session that concluded the webinar, participants engaged in lively discussions with both professors on topics such as the ethical boundaries of AI technology and the quantitative measurement of sensory experiences. The event not only showcased cutting-edge research but also prompted profound reflections on the future direction of technology and tourism integration.
