Importance and challenges of data mining and its applications in Macao

Abstract
While data analysis/analytics provides an essential means to foster scientific and objective decision-making capacity for firms and the government in Macao, data mining is a prerequisite for realizing data analysis. In this salon, I explicate that Macao indeed is in its initial stage to push forward the applications of data analysis positively, in which data mining is subject to various technical challenges that are deemed to be improved at the outset. As a mini-economy and a tourism-based city, I argue that survey data actually plays a more important role than macroeconomic data in data analysis in the current stage. In addition, I will also highlight some important areas that promotion of data mining would be contributing to the future development of the Macao economy.

Research work of Ricardo Siu focuses on institutional economics, economics of casino gaming/tourism, the Macao and Chinese economies. On top of research outputs publishing in the related fields like Journal of Economic Issues and Gaming Law Review: Economics, Regulation, Compliance, and Policy, he is the author of the books Economic Principles for the Hospitality Industry (2020) and Developing the Frontiers of Casino Tourism: Progress and Prospects in East and Southeast Asia (2024).
