Fit Me for the Team or Fit the Team for Me? Two Approaches to Team Identification Development

Social identification is an important psychological process that creates cohesive social units. While previous research on team identification took a passive and static perspective to study what kind of teams are attractive targets of social identification, we argue that individual team members may also proactively develop their identification with their teams over time. From a study of employees’ experiences across 6 monthly repeated measurements, we found that some employees tend to identify more with their teams when they seek more feedbacks to fit themselves for the teams, and other employees tend to have higher team identification when they engage in more voice behavior to fit the team for themselves. This finding on the dynamic process of team identification development constitutes an important extension of the team identification literature.
Dr. Lida L. Zhang is an assistant professor of management at the University of Macau. She received her PhD in management from the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology and PhD in marketing from the University of Macau. Her research interests include relational demography and diversity, social identity, and employee proactivity. Her research has been published in journals such as Academy of Management Journal, Organization Science, and Asia Pacific Journal of Management.
