Abstract
With the ever-advancing artificial intelligence (AI), among others, firms in the medical device industry are increasingly integrating AI technology into product innovation to improve diagnostic accuracy, analytic efficiency, and personalized treatment. The multidisciplinary nature of such AI innovation requires them to leverage diverse knowledge across domains, which is increasingly stemming from internationalized R&D teams. Due to geographic and temporal differences, collaboration and learning within R&D teams across countries present challenges for developing AI innovation. In this study, we examine the impact of cross-border network infrastructure, which may play a key role in supporting collaboration and learning of a firm’s R&D teams in support of developing AI innovation. By constructing a panel dataset from medical device firms, we show that cross-border network infrastructure can improve firms’ AI innovation in terms of both quantity and quality, and this effect is stronger for a firm with R&D teams characterized by higher national diversity and is mediated by the firm’s knowledge deviation from its own and peers’ knowledge base. Novel theoretical and practical implications for managers and policymakers are discussed.

His research appears in premier journals such as MIS Quarterly, Information Systems Research, Journal of Management Information Systems, Journal of the Association for Information Systems, Strategic Management Journal, Journal of Marketing, and Journal of Management. He is the recipient of numerous awards, including the Association for Information Systems Early Career Award in 2020 and the Association for Information Systems Mid-Career Award in 2023. Currently, he serves as an associate editor for MIS Quarterly and as a senior editor for Journal of the Association for Information Systems. MIS Quarterly named him “Outstanding Associate Editor” in 2022.
