Abstract

We investigate an unobservable join-the-shortest-queue system with N nodes, in which each node has a dedicated arrival stream, and there is an additional arrival stream to balance the system load by routing customers to the shortest queue. A reward-cost structure is introduced to the system and our focus is to analyze the customer strategic behaviour. The equilibrium and social optimal strategies are derived for the unobservable mean field limit model. We show that the strategies obtained for the mean field model well approximate the finite N model.

Biography

Dr. Yiqiang Q. Zhao received a bachelor degree from Nanjing University of Information Science and Technology (formerly Nanjing Institute of Meteorology, China) before he went to Canada to pursue his graduate studies in 1986, first as a master’s student in the Department of Mathematics and Statistics at the University of Saskatchewan, and then transferred to a Ph.D. program in 1987. He received his Ph.D. degree in 1990. After a two-year appointment as a Postdoctoral Fellow sponsored by the Canadian Institute for Telecommunications Research (CITR) at Queen’s University, he joined the Department of Mathematics and Statistics of the University of Winnipeg as an Assistant Professor in 1992, and became an Associate Professor in 1996. In 2000, he joined Carleton University as an Associate Professor in the School of Mathematics and Statistics and became a Full Professor in 2003. He was the Director of the School from 2004 to 2007, and from 2010 to 2011,  the Director for the Ottawa-Carleton Institute of Mathematic and Statistics from 2015 to 2016, and the Associate Dean (Research and Graduate Studies) of the Faculty of Science at Carleton University from 2016 to 2019.

Dr. Zhao’s research interests are in applied probability and stochastic processes, with a particular emphasis on computer and telecommunication network applications. He has published over 100 peer-reviewed research papers. He has delivered over 70 presentations at conferences and has been invited more than 70 times to give talks at seminars/colloquia or workshops. He is currently an editor of the journal Stochastic Models, an associate editor of the journals Queueing Systems and OR Letters, and on the editorial board of International Journal of Communications, Queueing Models and Service Management, and Journal of Environmental Informatics.
