Huen, Patrick, Chen, J.J. & Liu, M., Seng Heng Bank: History and
Acquisition by ICBC, Palgrave-Macmillan, 2021. (ISBN 978-981-16-
0397-6).
This book examines the success story of Seng Heng Bank (SHB), the successful
acquisition of SHB by Industrial and Commercial Bank of China (ICBC), and the
continuing sound management and performance of ICBC (Macau). It shows how a loss
making small bank grew into one of the best banks in Macao and highlights the
achievement, awards, and recognition of SHB. The authors detail the SHB acquisition
process by ICBC, the biggest bank in the world in terms of total assets. They identify the
main contributing factors for the success of SHB and draw conclusions and implications
for bank managers in the region and beyond. The book demonstrates deeper
understanding of the interplay between individual institutions, banks, and the financial
system and the economy as a whole. It further demonstrates the impact of governance
in the financial soundness and public trust. As a result, Seng Heng Bank became a
trusted partner of Portuguese banks and a meaningful platform for the improvement of
economic and financial ties between Portugal, Macao and China. This book will be
valuable to finance professionals, academics and students and policy-makers. It is the
first and only empirical study of the development of a Macao local bank. It is essential
reading for anyone interested in banking and in the history of Macau and in the
legendary Dr. Stanley HO.
