Department of Management and Marketing – Global Reach, Local Touch
The Department of Management and Marketing (DMM) is supported by a group of diverse and competent faculty members. We aim to bring in a global perspective to our undergraduate and postgraduate programs in Faculty of Business Administration (FBA) while contributing to the needs and development of organizations and communities in the Greater Bay Area and beyond. This strategic intent permeates every aspect of our department – our academic programs, our students, our staff, and our research outputs as well as the markets we serve. With this distinctive positioning, we seek to prepare our students for their future aspirations.
Our department offers three essential areas of specializations, namely HRM (human resource management), MKTG (marketing) and GBM (global business management), which are among the most popular majors in the bachelor of business administration (BBA) program. The exchange program is a mandatory requirement of our GBM major whereby students normally spend one semester in a partner university abroad, most of them in Europe, North America, Australia, East and Southeast Asia. Our students have the opportunity to immerse themselves in a different cultural context, thus acquiring the soft skills acquired through their study abroad experiences. All students in the DMM are able to acquire international experience through their interactions with exchange students coming from our partner universities around the world.
Upon graduation, our students are provided with the opportunity to continue their studies either locally or abroad. FBA offered the first Master of Business Administration (MBA) program in Macau more than 30 years ago. Since then, it has always been the most sought-after MBA program in Macau and among our own graduates. The recent accreditation by Association of MBAs (AMBA), coupled with the outstanding achievement of our MBA alumni and a steady increase of applicants, reinforces our status as a leading provider of postgraduate management education in Macau and neighboring regions. For students who decided to pursue their studies abroad, many are admitted to prestigious universities, such as in London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE), Columbia Business School, Peking University, University of Melbourne, University of Hong Kong, National University of Singapore, Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST),, University of Warwick, ESADE in Barcelona, and other leading universities in the world.
The career prospects of our graduates have been outstanding and promising. Many of them have joined and taken up leadership positions in multinational corporations, like Air Asia, MasterCard, JLL, HSBC, Louis Vuitton, CICC, CINOCHEM OIL, Four Seasons Hotel, and MGM, government and non-profit organizations (IPIM, MGTO, MAPEAL, and OXFAM), and local companies (such as SJM Holdings Ltd-linked properties) and small and medium enterprises (SMEs), like jobs.call.me. Many of them have actually become entrepreneurs by establishing their own business.
All the above achievements are hardly possible without our outstanding team of faculty members. With 27 faculty members from eight different countries/regions with PhDs from leading universities in UK, USA, Singapore, Canada, Portugal, Australia, China, Hong Kong and Macau, we are committed to provide a variety of cutting-edged, internationally-competitive, and discipline-specific knowledge, skills, and experiences to our students. Our teaching quality is heavily seasoned by our research output and enthusiasm with publications covering a wide range of domains in Marketing, Management and International Business. Some of our colleagues are influential in their specialized fields, thus serving important positions such as senior editor, associate editor, guest co-editor and editorial review board members in leading international academic journals. In particular, DMM has designated corporate social responsibility, leadership in organizations, organizational change and innovation, digital marketing and consumer behavior as our focal research areas, with publications in premier international journals, such as Academy of Management Journal (4*), Journal of International Business Studies (4*), Journal of Applied Psychology (4*), Journal of Management (4*), Strategic Management Journal (4*), Organization Science (4*) and Research Policy (4*).
DMM always strives to maintain close connections and thus made significant contributions to local communities. Over the past years, our colleagues have served as keynote speakers in major industry events, hosted and participated in business seminars, delivered corporate training programs, and conducted professional consultancy and community projects. For examples, keynote speeches were given in regional and local conferences, such as The 10th Macau Youth Political Skills Training Scheme, Macau International Start-up Week and The Conference of Development of Guangdong, Hong Kong and Macau in the Greater Bay Area. Our clients for executive training programs, professional consultancy and business advisory services included Melco Resorts and Entertainment, Galaxy Entertainment Group Foundation, Dairy Farm Group (HK), Koi Kei Bakery and Kirin Brewery (Zhuhai) Ltd. In addition, DMM also collaborated with the Institute for the Study of Commercial Gaming (ISCG) to provide regular training to the employees of local gaming operators, such as Sands (Macau), MGM Macau and Wynn Macau.
We will continue our commitment in serving the local and regional markets by providing high quality education infused with an international flavor and underpinned by our impactful research, an aspiration that is unusual for us being in a small-but-charming city that is Macau. As an integral part of FBA, we continue to work together with other departments in contributing to the development of our own discipline and beyond.
